Active Steps: Walking and Learning for Stronger Communities

Active Steps, run by London Advocacy and generously funded by Sport England’s Movement Fund, combines regular youth park walks and family culture walks to promote physical activity, strengthen community bonds, and foster cultural learning.
The project takes place across London’s parks and cultural landmarks in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

About the Project

Active Steps encourages people of all ages and backgrounds to get active, connect with others, and discover the city in meaningful ways.

By blending gentle physical activity with cultural learning, the project helps participants build confidence, improve wellbeing, and develop a stronger sense of belonging within their local communities.

Our walking groups create space for connection, reflection, and shared discovery. Participants are invited to explore London’s parks, streets, and historic sites while engaging in conversations that celebrate diversity, inclusion, and togetherness.

Goals

The Active Steps project focuses on:

  • Encouraging regular physical activity and reducing sedentary lifestyles among participants
  • Building stronger community connections through shared experiences and social interaction
  • Promoting cultural awareness by exploring London’s historic and multicultural landmarks
  • Supporting mental wellbeing and reducing loneliness through group activities in nature
  • Developing leadership and peer mentoring by training volunteer walk leaders from within the community
  • Creating a sustainable walking culture that continues beyond the project period

Project Activities

Our activities are designed to be inclusive, enjoyable, and beneficial for both body and mind:

  • Community Youth Park Walks: Relaxed group walks led by volunteer leaders, encouraging movement and conversation in local green spaces
  • Cultural Discovery Family Walks: Guided family walks exploring London’s rich cultural, artistic, and historical heritage
  • Reflection & Connection Sessions: Informal gatherings for participants to share stories, experiences, and cultural insights during the walking

Project Duration

April 2025 – March 2026, with potential expansion subject to additional funding.
Regular walking sessions and community meet-ups will take place throughout the year in parks and neighbourhoods across Greater London.

Active Steps aims to improve health, wellbeing, and social connectedness through regular walking activities.

Family cultural walks include guided city routes exploring London’s heritage and stories, while youth park walks build a sustainable habit of movement and outdoor engagement.
